What should you drink when you're feeling under the weather and need to go hard into recovery mode? Tonics.   

If the word 'tonic' has you confused, let's get you up to speed. It's any substance that, when taken, promotes well being (okay, maybe not gin & tonics... but you get the idea.) Tonics are natural drinks that make you feel good⁠—and what's not to love about that?

So get ready to feel phenomenal with the 3 DIY tonic recipes that'll we'll be drinking throughout the throes of the cold season. (And, as always, they are 100% hive-approved.)               

THE HIVE FIVE 

Elderberry syrup has been used for hundreds of years to fight ill-willed germs. It is packed with antioxidants like anthocyanins and contains unique compounds that can lend a helpful hand to weary immune systems. That's why this tonic recipe contains a good dose of elderberry syrup, along with 4 other powerhouse ingredients that your body shouldn't be without when your throat gets scratchy. 

¼ c gently warmed elderberry syrup (make your own with this recipe, opens in a new tab)

1 Tbsp raw apple cider vinegar  

1 Tbsp B.Powered Honey, opens in a new tab  

25-30 drops echinacea extract/tincture 

4-8 spritzes Propolis Spray, opens in a new tab  

    1. Add all ingredients into a jar and close lid tightly.  
    2. Shake jar vigorously until ingredients are combined. 
    3. Sip on its own or mix with sparkling water for a little extra flair. 

(*You can also make this recipe in larger batches in a blender and store it in a glass jar for a week’s worth of easy doses.)   

IMMUNE POWER SHOT 

Garlic may be pungent, but this shot is worth its weight in gold when it comes to supporting your immune system. Many studies, opens in a new tab have suggested that raw garlic can enhance the immune response of certain white blood cells in your body, so it's worth the strong smelling breath if you're feeling a little off. Luckily, there's plenty of B.Powered and Propolis Spray in there to cut the garlicky flavor while providing bonus germ defense!    

1 medium clove of fresh raw garlic, finely minced   

2 Tbsp organic lemon juice 

1 Tbsp B.Powered Honey, opens in a new tab 

6 spritzes Propolis Spray, opens in a new tab 

Splash of hot (not boiling) water 

    1. Stir together minced garlic, lemon juice, honey & propolis in a mug. Let sit for 10 minutes. 
    2. Add a splash of hot water and stir until honey dissolves. 
    3. Swirl so all the garlic isn’t settled on the bottom and take as a shot. (Keep extra B.Powered on hand in case you need a chaser!)       

THE ULTIMATE PSL 

This isn't the pumpkin spice latte you'll find at your local coffee shop. For one, this drink is caffeine free⁠—perfect for when you're in rest & recovery mode. It's also packed with real, nutrient-dense pumpkin, healthy fats from coconut, and valuable amino acids from collagen. Oh, and lets not forget about that little fortifying drizzle of B.Powered! It's a sip of wholesome, real food wellness.    

1 ½ c non dairy milk  

2 Tbsp coconut cream  

2 Tbsp pumpkin puré

1 scoop grass-fed collagen peptides  

½ tsp cinnamon 

¼ tsp cardamom 

1 tsp vanilla extract   

Pinch of salt   

    1. Heat the milk and coconut cream in a small saucepan over medium heat. Heat until scalded (just as the edges begin to bubble). Meanwhile, add remaining ingredients to blender.   
    2. Pour hot milk into blender, hold blender lid firmly in place, and blend for 15 to 20 seconds, until homogeneous and frothy.   
    3. Pour into your favorite big mug, top with extra cinnamon or coconut cream & enjoy!
